Cerebral Palsy results from brain damage in the part of the brain that processes higher mental and cognitive functions, movement, and sensory function. A child with Cerebral Palsy can have impairments ranging from mild to catastrophic. Cerebral Palsy is caused by injuries to the brain occurring at or near the time a baby is born. The injury can occur due to lack of oxygen, physical trauma, or bleeding in the brain.
Cerebral Palsy can be caused by a decrease in the oxygen levels getting to the baby during the labor and delivery period. A baby in the uterus can be deprived of oxygen if the contractions are too strong after the mother receives Pitocin, also called oxytocin, to speed the labor. The doctors and nurses monitor the baby’s heart rate and can tell when the heart slows, causing decelerations. When certain kinds of decelerations are seen, the doctors and nurses can take appropriate action to return the situation to normal. However, when no action is taken or the wrong action is taken, the baby may be oxygen deprived for a sufficient amount of time to cause brain damage.
Cerebral Palsy patients have permanent injuries. They need life long medical, nursing and hospital care, specialized equipment and assistive devices. Cerebral Palsy patients can be so impaired that they will never be employed and need attention around the clock. Some may have learning disabilities making employment very difficult or impossible.
Sometimes the brain injury may not be diagnosed for months or years after the traumatic birth.
